Latest figures a reflection of small business growth

March 12, 2012

The numbers are out: 227,000 new jobs in the United States.

The U.S. Department of Labor statistic screams optimism- cautiously. The unemployment rate has gone done nearly an entire point since August 2011. Though the February labor increases haven’t budged the UE rate, it’s still a strong indication of the role small businesses are playing in the fight against economic stagnation.

Professional and business services added 82,000 jobs in February. Employment in professional and business services has grown by 1.4 million since a recent low point in September 2009. Health care and social assistance employment rose by 61,000 over the month.

Manufacturing employment rose by 31,000 in February. All of the increase occurred in durable goods manufacturing, with job gains in fabricated metal products (+11,000), transportation equipment (+8,000), machinery (+5,000), and furniture and related products (+3,000). Durable goods manufacturing has added 444,000 jobs since a recent low point in January 2010.

All of these indicators are strongly affect by small business growth. As brilliant minds leave corporate America to achieve their personal dreams, they’re starting their own businesses and partnering with other entrepreneurial spirits to help achieve the American dream. The Accelerator is seeing this more and more.

We are all about jobs. With 21 early-stage innovators providing 81 jobs, we strive to skate where the puck will be…. not where it has been. Become the future, everyone!

Micro-lending seminar yields good results

March 5, 2012

Last Thursday, the Accelerator hosted a seminar on micro-lending with the Orange County Chamber of Commerce and Community Capital Resources. Featuring Kim Jacobs (Executive Director) and Tamara Underwood (Director, Small Business Lending) from Community Capital Resources (CCR), along with Carol Smith from Orange County Chamber of Commerce, the seminar provided insights on micro-lending and where to seek assistance.

CCR is a not-for-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that provides access to the knowledge, technical assistance and financial resources needed to foster financial security, self sufficiency and vibrant, diverse communities. CCR provides loans, training and support to assist emerging entrepreneurs and existing business to reach their business and economic goals. Tamara Underwood holds regular office hours at OCBA during the week to meet with businesses, so dial her up and set an appointment, after the presentation.

The Orange County Chamber of Commerce –  a true partner with OCBA in enhancing the business climate in the County – has nearly 2,000 businesses and organizations making it one of the 10 largest chambers of commerce in New York State. Among a host of services to its members, the OC CoC extends benefits to Woman and Minority Owned Businesses, as well as managing the Mid Hudson Regional Revolving Loan Trust Fund.
